A naturally occuring protective layer of wax is present on the needles or scales of conifers. Primarily, this wax layer protects the plant from evaporation. Visibly, the colour of the needles or scales shifts towards blue the more wax is present, which varies between species and cultivars. This phenomenon gives rise to a whole range of colours; from soothing ocean blues to vibrant blues.
