Araucaria refers to ‘Araucania’, the region where A. araucana is found and its indigenous people (Mapuche) are also similarly called ‘Araucanians’.
heterophylla refers to ‘different leaves’; indicating that at the time it had different leaves than other known species of Araucaria.

Habitat
