Etymology
Araucaria refers to ‘Araucania’, the region where A. araucana is found and its indigenous people (Mapuche) are also similarly called ‘Araucanians’.
bernieri refers to J. Bernier. Father J. Bernier was the first Conservator of the New Caledonian Museum and son (also) J. Bernier collected a sample of A. bernieri.

Habitat
The natural habitats for Araucaria bernieri are subtropical/tropical moist montane forests. It is naturally found at an elevation of at least 800 up to 800 metres. There are no conifers associated with Araucaria bernieri that are known of.
